1 Week Later

It was about this time last week when I got the news of Grandma's stroke. I can't believe it's been that long already, that's how it feels to me, anyway. Due to scheduling problems, which happened to work in my favor, I was able to cancel my two night shifts last night and tonight, so Braden and I packed up and headed to go see Poppy and GG yesterday. I think Mom was really excited to see Braden, he sure brightens spirits wherever he goes! Be it other patients and their family members laughing and me chasing Braden down the hospital hallways...the nurses laughing as I chase Braden out of their staff room...or a sweet itty bitty asking me "where's the Roadrunner today?"

I am happy to report that Grandma looks SO much better 1 week later. She can now swallow and even feed herself, she's off of her IV fluids, and was sitting up in bed, very alert and smiling at me when I went to see her last night. Braden gave his GG a big kiss...and then ran, and ran, and ran, and then ran some more all around the hospital.

She does physio (PT) every day and Mom said she's very determined and completes it all and doesn't quit early, even when the PT asks her if she wants to. Go, Grandma, Go! She answers yes and no questions, she still has the sparkle in her eye, and she's been practicing writing with her left (non-dominant) hand on a white board, and even played Yahtzee with me on my iPad today!

A lot of people have been asking me lots of questions about how things will be like for her with her recovery. The truth of the matter is, I wish I could tell you, I'm sure Grandma wishes she knew, but we just don't know. Recovery from a stroke varies patient to patient so much, that there's just no way to predict.

I thank you all so much for your texts, tweets, comments, and emails asking how Grandma is doing. Grandma is a faithful reader of this blog, Mom has been keeping her up to speed on her iPad, so if you have anything you would like my Grandma and/or Mom to see, please leave a comment, they get read!

  10. Hi Sarah, don't know if you remember me, we probably met each other only a couple of times as wee little ones, but I'm your Great Aunt Gladys's granddaughter. Saw your blog on Kathleen's fb page and love to hear that she's doing better.
