A Day "With" Thomas

Yesterday was supposed to be grand. It was supposed to rival the best day of his life. I had been looking forward to taking Braden to "A Day With Thomas" for over 6 months. Pretty much as soon as his Thomas obsession started I was scouring the internet looking for Thomas activities and hoping that he had a live show or something I could take Braden to one day. Enter: A Day With Thomas. They transform various railway parks around Canada and the US into the "Island of Sodor" so that kids can enjoy their day with Thomas. A life size Thomas can take your kids on a 20 minute train ride, there are sing-a-longs and activities, and you can even meet Sir Topham Hatt!

Friday's weather was gorgeous. We were sitting around outside at a friend's house Friday night while he finished up on the BBQ. The forecast for Saturday...stank. It stank all week. And it didn't change. And today? Gorgeous. Windy, but the sun is out and it's a far cry from yesterday. Two nice days sandwiched a snowy, rainy, mucky day. Yes, you read that correctly. SNOW. May 5th, Cinqo de Mayo, snow. Even living in Canada all my life, I could not believe it. This was the scene as we entered the park:

It might not "look" that bad, but it was. It was awful and unbearable. I was prepared for rain, but not for snow and slush. As we entered the park, I handed the guy our tickets, and when he asked me how I was, I replied, "wet, cold, & miserable". Poor guy.

Braden could not handle the slush in his Thomas rain boots. He slipped after we went into the bathroom and his fleece-lined jeans were absolutely drenched and frozen. I felt like the Worst Mother Ever. As we approached the train, he looked up at me and said (for the first time) "I cold, Mommy!" He never complains about the weather. He'd live outside if I let him. Again - Worst Mother Ever. Then as soon as he saw this:
Day With Thomas
He shouted "T'as! T'as! T'as!" And was so thrilled. We didn't even stay for our train ride, it was that miserable and gross out. Plus, how could I let him walk around in frozen, wet jeans for any longer than I did?

I am so disappointed. He would have had so much fun. I'm debating going back next weekend after swimming lessons...but there's no guarantee we'd get a train ride because we didn't buy our tickets in advance. The train is always there, so we will go back on a nice day this summer, but Day With Thomas is only here today and next weekend. I guess my saving grace is that he didn't "know" all that was to be that day. I couldn't prep him in advance of the day that was supposed to be. Hopefully he still likes Thomas next year and we can try again!
