Sew, I Have This Goal...

Back in junior high (I don't even want to count how many years ago that was!), I loved sewing in home economics. We never had a sewing machine that I used at home, but I really did love it and was pretty good at following the tutorials. I made my own wheat bag and a nice little tote too, among other things! Well, I've had my "One Day I Will Sew" board brewing on Pinterest and have accumulated 74 pins. Seventy-four. There's ~8 weeks left until baby and I want to start BEFORE s/he comes! Jay bought me a sewing machine for my birthday, back in April...and it sits untouched! Also, it's one of my 30 before 30 goals, so I need to get on this!

So I call on you, my sewing friends, bloggers, and readers! Give me your tips! I haven't even looked at these pins yet, but I plan on doing it as soon as this post is published!

I want to do simple things for baby like receiving blankets, burp clothes, and maybe even a car seat cover or something!

Here are my questions, don't laugh, it's been almost 2 decades since I've sewn!
  • I have the sewing machine....what else do I need to buy other than fabric? Spools? Needles?
  • Do you have your favorite tutorials pinned or bookmarked somewhere? YouTube?
  • Where is the best (Canadian) place to buy sewing stuff?
  • Where do you recommend to buy fabric?
  • Any and all tips/tricks/advice are appreciated!

I need something to do in my evenings other than being a zombie on the couch getting lost in TV land. I don't usually go on the internet much at night, that's what my mornings are for. I want to be productive for this babe and make him/her some things before s/he gets here!

Thanks in advance!

  1. YAY!! I have TWO sewing machines. A year ago, I had none. I bought one off Craigslist the beginning of December for $25; it was the kind I learned on, an old Kenmore. My MIL had bought one for me for Christmas. I've used both and like them. I'd DEFINITELY get a bobbin case if I were you and buy bobbins!!

Do you have Jo-Ann Fabrics in Canada? If so, that's where I get most of my fabric. You can sign up for their flyers because they often send out pamphlets with coupons and let you know what's on sale.

    1. No, we don't have Jo-Ann. We have "Fanny's Fabrics" so I do want to go there. Just have no idea how much to buy! Hopefully they'll have some nice employees and not look at me like I'm an alien or something! Thanks for the help!

  2. I LOVE to sew! You definitely need thread, and I recommend buying a pack of bobbins so you don't have to rethread each time you want to change colors. I have two boards on pinterest...

    this one: http://pinterest.com/brittanymcglade/krafty-for-the-kids/

    and this one: http://pinterest.com/brittanymcglade/getting-crafty/

Not everything is sewing related on those boards, but some of it is! Jo-Ann Fabrics has pretty good prices, I buy online from them a lot because I don't have one local.

I'm not the absolute best sewer in the world, but I do love it, and I would be happy to try to answer any questions you have!

    1. Ok, I know the term bobbin...but definitely wouldn't have thought to buy any, thanks so much for the tips. No Jo-Ann's here in Canada!

  4. My aunt taught me to sew when i was young. I made a pillow, an apron and took a quilting class... I have since done NOTHING! I would love to learn how to make all this cute stuff I always see online. I'll be interested in watching your learning process!

  6. I got my sewing machine for my birthday back in January. I pretty much taught myself. My mom bought me a lot of my stuff cause she's been sewing for forever. A good pair of fabric scissors, pins, ruler, and bobbins. I have a board on pinterest that I have all my sewing stuff saved. I save pins that have detailed tutorials with them

Good luck. I've made 2 blankets, burp cloths, a changing pad and a diapers/wipes case

  8. My best advice for learning how to sew or for making stuff when you just start out is to have a mother, sister, or mother- or sister-in-law who is an expert on your speed dial. Make sure you have a good pair of fabric scissors.
I know you said you want to start before #2 but Black Friday sales are where I get good deals on fabric. I go to JoAnn's but I don't know if Canada has them.

    1. Firstly, I don't have any "expert" sewers in the family. One SIL is a good quilter and another is also just learning to sew. I can get the fabric scissors, though!

We are Canadian and don't celebrate Black Friday/don't have the deals unless there's an online store you can recommend? We don't have JoAnn's here :( Thanks anyway!

    2. Shucks! Sorry I couldn't be more help. I just checked on their website and it turns out, JoAnn's does ship to Canada. They always have good sales around major holidays. Good luck!

    3. Thanks for checking about JoAnn's shipping! I really appreciate that, no need to apologize at all!! :)

  9. Actually both your Grandmothers are very good sewers! My mom used to make fancy itty bitty Barbie clothes when I was little. She also quilted and sewed most of my dresses. Grandma B is also a very good sewer. She made those Raggedy Ann/Andy dolls.

    1. I think I will need more "hands on" help, as that's the kind of learner I imagined both grandmas to be good sewers!

  10. Oh my gosh I love that you have a sweet little baby on the way and what better way to nest then to sew... =)

    Aloha,
I'm a day late and a whole lot short but I'm following ya now from the GFC hop. If you're up for a bit of a ride-- I'd just love to have ya with me at localsugarhawaii.com where life is a wave and we're paddling out to meet it, (and also praying really hard that we don't wipe out-- at least not too often) =).

    xo,
